What are OLFA incense sticks made from?
OLFA incense is made with natural aromatic materials such as woods, resins, botanicals and essential oils, combined with a plant-based binder and bamboo core.
Each formula is built around the aromatic materials themselves and developed for both scent and burn.
What do we mean by “natural incense”?
For OLFA, natural incense means formulating around the scent of natural aromatic materials rather than recreating their aroma with synthetic fragrance oils.
We do not use DPG, petroleum-based fragrance carriers or chemical binders. Every ingredient has a purpose in the formula and in the way the stick burns.
How are OLFA incense sticks made?
OLFA incense sticks are hand-rolled, not dipped, and made in smaller batches.
Each formula goes through repeated scent and burn testing to balance the aromatic materials with a steady, restrained-smoke burn.
Why does OLFA incense cost more than conventional incense?
Natural resins, woods, botanicals and essential oils generally cost more than synthetic fragrance materials and inexpensive carriers commonly used in mass-market incense. Smaller-batch production, hand-rolling and repeated scent and burn testing also add to the cost.
Working with natural materials means dealing with changes in harvest, origin, availability and price. When an important material becomes difficult to source, we would rather wait than quietly replace it with a cheaper substitute.
These choices make OLFA more costly to produce, but they are also what allow us to make incense to the standard we set for ourselves.
Why can OLFA incense vary slightly from one batch to another?
Because we work with natural materials.
The color, texture and aroma of woods, resins, botanicals and essential oils can shift slightly with origin, season, climate and harvest. Those variations can carry through to the finished incense while the formula and quality standard remain the same.
Natural materials aren't standardized into perfect sameness.
Nature was never meant to be identical.
How should I experience an OLFA scent before and during burning?
The scent of an unlit OLFA stick, known as the cold throw, gives you the first glimpse of the composition.
Once the stick is lit, heat begins releasing different aromatic components, allowing additional layers of the formula to become more noticeable.
The Aroma Profile for each scent maps the composition through Top, Heart and Base notes. They describe the structure of the scent: the first impressions, the notes at its heart, and the deeper notes that give it depth and persistence.
As the stick burns, these layers can become more or less noticeable and interact differently through heat.
The cold scent is a preview. The full scent unfolds through heat.
How long does an OLFA incense stick burn?
Most OLFA incense sticks burn for approximately 40–45 minutes, with slight variation depending on the formulation and airflow in the room.
Each standard box contains 15 sticks.
How should I store my incense, and does it expire?
To preserve the aroma, keep your incense in its original packaging in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, heat and humidity.
Incense does not suddenly expire, but natural aromatic materials can gradually change or lose intensity over time. Proper storage helps preserve the scent as closely as possible to the way it was intended.
Why do some OLFA formulations contain 5–8% coconut-shell activated charcoal?
Because how incense burns matters to how it smells.
Natural woods, resins and oils behave differently under heat. A slow, controlled ember helps them burn evenly and release their aroma gradually, without the smoke overpowering the scent.
That small 5–8% helps maintain a steady ember and keep smoke more restrained, while contributing very little aroma of its own.
The other 92–95% remains centered around aromatic woods and natural materials, so charcoal is a small functional part of the formula, not its base.
The result is a slow, controlled, lower-smoke burn that keeps the aromatic materials at the center of the experience.
As with every ingredient in an OLFA formula, it is there because it has a job to do.
